aortic dissection: An often-fatal acute medical problem in which the walls of the aorta (the main artery leading from the heart) tear apart, resulting in rapid blood loss. While rare, this is a possible complication of Turner syndrome.

cataracts: These occur when the lens of the eye becomes opaque and no longer allows light to pass through easily. A possible complication in women with Turner syndrome.

chromosomes: The structure into which DNA is organized inside cells. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes for a total of 46.

complication: A secondary disease or disorder that is a result of having another disease or disorder.

coronary heart disease (CHD): A condition in which the blood vessels of the heart become narrower than usual, often as the result of a buildup of fat plaques along their walls. CHD can lead to heart attacks. A possible complication in women with Turner syndrome.

diabetes: A disease in which the body loses its ability to effectively control blood sugar levels, resulting in more sugar in the blood than normal. Diabetes can lead to a number of complications and is itself a possible complication in women with Turner syndrome.

edema: A condition in which fluid builds up in the tissues of a part of the body, causing swelling.

estrogen therapy: A type of hormone replacement therapy in which only estrogen is given.
